Open Questions on Maker, Origin, and Age
No peer-reviewed source definitively identifies a specific individual maker of the Antikythera Mechanism; claims naming a particular craftsman remain speculative. Where the device was built is likewise unsettled. The most frequently cited hypothesis for the mechanism's origin links its construction to Rhodes and associates its design tradition with the astronomer Hipparchus, though this attribution is not universally accepted. Alternative hypotheses proposed in credible sources attribute the mechanism's manufacture to Corinth, Syracuse, or Pergamon instead of Rhodes. Its age relative to the shipwreck is similarly disputed among researchers.
